Whether you want to lose weight, build muscle, or focus on working out specific areas of your body – NTC is for you!

At first I was skeptical, how could an iPhone app (free by the way!) compete with tried and tested perfectly tailored workouts created by professionals? But I gave it a shot, and boy oh boy was it hard! I overestimated my fitness, selecting ADVANCED and the maximum number of minutes to work out (45) – I couldn’t do 15 minutes before I switched to lighter weights!

The app allows you to select from 30 or 45 minute workouts, specifying your fitness level, as well as the type of workout you want (toning, weight loss, or bulking). Mini-workouts that last 15 minutes and target specific body areas are also available, and you can play your own music in the background! The app is easy to use, has clear instruction, a voice-over telling you your next step (so you don’t have to keep looking at your phone), and videos demonstrating each exercise. What’s so great is that all you really need is a pair of dumbbells! Some workouts require a medicine ball, but I do those with dumbbells as well and it’s just the same.

I’ve been using the app daily for 2 months now – and the results are amazing! The workouts combine both sports-specific as well as general conditioning exercises that really help build a strong foundation. For the past month I have been combining NTC with Jen Rankin’s Muscle Building Program for the extra bulk that I like to have.

So give it a try girls (I think it’s a girls app – sorry guys) – you won’t regret it!

Dachi – The basics of Stances

Yoshitaka Funakoshi (also known as Gigo Funakoshi, the 3rd son of Gichin Funakoshi, who founded Shotokan Karate), the creator of Fudo Dachi and Kiba Dachi

“Dachi” is the Japanese word for “Stance” – The way your feet and legs are positioned when practicing techniques in the Dojo. Alot of beginners have trouble adjusting to the basic stances, and then face even greater trouble when introduced to different stances. In this post I shall provide you with the correct positioning of the 4 basic stances learnt when first training Shotokan Karate.

Zenkutsu Dachi: Front Stance

Feet should be hip width apart, front foot facing the front, and back foot facing a 45 degree angle (at least). Front knee should be bent until it is above the toes of the front foot. 6o percent of the weight is on the front foot, and 40 percent is on the back foot.

Kokutsu Dachi: Back Stance

Heels of the feet must be on the same line, front foot facing forward, and back foot facing the side. The front knee must be slightly bent. 70 percent of the weight must be on the back leg, and 30 percent on the front leg.

Kiba Dachi: Horse riding Stance

Both feet should point forward, and must be parallel to one another. The body weight should be the same on both feet. Feet should be placed about 2 shoulder widths apart, and the knees should be pushed outward, not turning in towards each other.

Fudo Dachi: Rooted Stance

This stance is a mix of zenkutsu dachi (front stance) and kiba dachi (horse riding stance). The front leg is placed in the position of zenkutsu dachi angled slightly inward, and the back leg is in kiba dachi facing a 45 degree angle. The weight should be 55 percent on the front leg, and 45 percent on the back leg.
