Here I’ll show the rules I set out for my classes:

  1. Arrive on time for the class. Arriving late is disrespectful to the instructor.
  2. Always call instructors Sensei, and senior students Senpai.
  3. Remember to respect yourself, as well as others.
  4. Always follow instruction effectively. Follow instruction without question.
  5. Remember to say please, thank you, and you’re welcome.
  6. Maintain good hygiene and keep yourself looking tidy – wash your karate suit, keep nails and toenails short, tie hair up properly, etc.
  7. If you don’t know what to do in a situation, ask a senior.
  8. No smoking in the dojo.
  9. No swearing in the dojo, it will not be tolerated.
  10. No chewing gum or eating during training.
  11. No jewelry during training, as they could be dangerous during sparring.
  12. Bow when entering and leaving the dojo as a sign of respect.
  13. Always show 100% commitment.
  14. Do not ask to drink water, go to the toilet, or have a rest break unless completely necessary. Breaks will be given by the instructor regularly.
  15. Shoes must be arranged neatly outside the training hall.
  16. When arriving late to class, bow to the Sensei, and wait for permission to join the class.
  17. Come to class to learn, practice at home.
  18. Children should be dropped off at the dojo, not in the parking lot.
  19. Always let the Sensei know if you are suffering from an illness, injury, or require special assistance.
  20. Let the Sensei know if you must leave the class early.
  21. Bring bottled water to class, and drink plenty of water during training.
  22. Women and girls should wear a plain white shirt inside their gi.
  23. Do not become angry or upset in the dojo.
  24. Always accept correction positively and with an open mind.
  25. Never contradict or attempt to correct the Sensei.
